Hey Black Child!
Zola Lamothe's Hey Black Child! is a photography collection named after Useni Eugene Perkins's famous poem Hey Black Child which has inspired children to follow their dreams since 1975.
Reflecting on her own entrepreneurial journey, Lamothe realized that her family's gift of Black Wealth wasn't financial but educational and spiritual. As a third-generation entrepreneur, she had generations of wisdom to lean on. More importantly, her two business owning parents believed in her path before she could believe in herself. Inspired by this love, Zola continued to share this gift by finding children in the community and showing them that their professional dreams can come true.
Fostering generational wisdom, each child was matched with a Black mentor in their aspirational career. These community mentors hosted the children at their place of business for the photoshoot, shared valuable knowledge from their own experiences, and volunteered to be a resource for each child as they pursue their passions.
Hey Black Child! gives children the chance to show up as their future selves, making their dreams tangible. But more importantly it reminds us of the collective power of community. It shows that believing in one another and sharing the lessons we’ve learned can take us all farther.
